India on alert as bombers sought Ahmedabad in shock after blasts

At the swanky airport building there is no indication that Ahmedabad is under siege, despite the fact that, on Saturday, 17 bombs exploded within minutes of each other, killing dozens of people.

Four of those bombs struck hospitals in the city.

Only after driving into the city itself does one appreciate the enormity of what happened here.

Lorries full of paramilitary forces, police patrols and checkpoints are everywhere. It feels like the city is going to war.

Ahmedabad is in complete shock. Police vehicles are the main moving objects on its wide streets - residents are staying indoors.

But the city's hospitals bear the marks of the bomb attacks.

'A deafening sound'

The foundations of the Civil Hospital, one of the biggest government medical establishments in the country, were shaken on Saturday evening when two bombs went off in quick succession, killing 15 people on the spot.

The deputy superintendent of the hospital, KN Meheria, is still shaken. He was inside the trauma ward attending to the wounded in the previous blasts when the two bombs exploded.

"I have never seen bombs going off in hospital," he says, shaking his head.

"There was a deafening sound from just outside the hospital, when I came out I saw flames leaping out of the vehicles parked just outside the trauma ward."

Laxman Dev Chudasma is one of dozens being treated for injuries following the blasts.

"I was carrying a man who was badly injured in the first round of blasts," he says.

"Just when I was entering the hospital gate there were explosions and then I saw people running away in shock.

"I lay on the ground, but I knew I had been hit by shrapnel."

Mr Chudasama does not know what happened to the man he was taking to hospital.

Bharat Bhai was badly burned in the explosions.

The relatives of the injured were angry, very angry. One of them said foreign hands were out to destabilise the country

"My clothes were on fire," he says, still writhing in pain. "I have burn injuries all over my body."

The wounded men and women have been put in a large hall, which is crammed with their relatives and friends.

Medical staff run from one end of the hall to the other depending on who needs more attention.

The relatives of the injured are angry, very angry.

One of them says foreign hands are out to destabilise the country.

He says Indian Muslims are being used to carry out the attacks but the plans are being made outside India.

His sentiments are echoed by many in the hall.

Fears of retaliation

There is palpable tension in some parts of the city.

Crowd gathers round scene of one of blasts
Makeshift devices appear to have been hidden in everyday items

Six years ago it was in Ahmedabad that many Muslims were killed in violence which was seen as retaliation for the killings of about 60 Hindu pilgrims in Godhra, Gujarat.

Muslims now fear there might be retaliatory attacks against them.

But so far there are no signs of a backlash. State chief minister Narendra Modi and other leaders have appealed for calm and it seems people are listening.

The police headquarters look like a garrison. Units of the Rapid Action Force are on standby here.

The city's joint police commissioner, HP Singh, says they still did not know who was behind these blasts or their motive.

But investigators are working on leads, following the discovery that the registration numbers of the two vehicles used in the hospital attacks were fake.

Mr Singh confirms that an e-mail sent to some media outlets five minutes before the blasts originated in Mumbai (Bombay).

The anti-terrorism squad in Mumbai has since raided several places where they believe suspected militants could be hiding.

Movie Review:Jaane tu ... ya Jaane na

I watched the movie today, exactly a week after its release,at PVR Priya and I feel like writing about it(unlike Love Story 2050 which was way too predictable, combined with ordinary acting and dialogue delivery).

Jaane Tu.. doesn't have any extraordinary script. If you look back at the movies that have released(especially with actors making their debut) you'll find a lot of similarity. Its a typical college romance but what makes the movie worth every penny you spend on it is the way in which a simple story has been narrated. All the characters fit in their roles naturally.Genelia has got a refreshing break from the childish image she used to have and I'm sure she must already have got more offers!

Imran Khan is this simple, sweet, typical chocolate boy many girls would be drooling over by now.He looks as if he had got his name written all over that role. The casting of the movie starts in a rather unusual way, with images of couples of all ages.Honestly,I couldnt get what exactly they tried to show, can only guess..
Anyways, once the movie starts, you get glued to your seats.Never once during the movie did I feel like running out, though the script was somewhat predictable.
It's got everything except fight sequences, i.e. emotional scenes, college romance and an adequate dose of quality, situational humour.

After all,if Aamir Khan decided to produce this one so he must have been convinced by the quality.

The movie isn't perfect,as is the case with all the Hindi movies,as it defies logic a few times, one of it was: For majority of first half the story was based in college but I can't remember any classroom scenes or for that matter, any prof!!

But then, you wouldn't like any Hindi movie if you start searching for logic in each one of them, would you?

To cap it off, Jaane Tu.. is running full four shows at PVR Priya for second successive week and if I remember correctly, the last movie to have achieved this was Kal Ho Naa Ho.. so that should tell you something about the response of the audience.

Lower Commodity Prices Push Dollar Higher

Lower Commodity Prices Push Dollar Higher

The Usd remained strong in the European session based on weaker commodity prices and light economic data out of the US. The EurUsd moved back to the 1.56 level after losing a bit of ground over night mainly due to the speculation that Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae will need to recapitalize. The UsdJpy continues to trade at the low 107 level, while the GbpUsd is testing the 1.97 level. European equity markets declined sharply based on weak economic data out of Germany, while the US markets are mixed due to lighter crude oil prices. Commodities have retreated from recent highs in both energy and metals sectors with oil trading lower at 135 and, gold lower as well at 919. Bonds rallied in Europe prompted by economic concerns following recent data, while treasuries are mixed with yields on the 2yr wider by 2bps, and the rest of the curve tightening based on concerns about future US market performance.

In the Eurozone, the German Chamber of Commerce cited that weak economic data and higher energy prices should lend to a growth rate around 1% in 2009. The market doesn’t expect the ECB to revert to a more dovish tone until energy prices ease further, thus allowing inflation to continue to be a central concern. The UK saw further weakness in the housing sector, and it is reflected in the price of the cable as it is trading with a 1.97 handle against the dollar. DLCG House Price Index came in at 3.7%, which was lower than the prior month but better than expectations which were 3.2%. Consumer confidence will be released later this evening for the UK; we should look for a soft number considering pressures stemming from the housing decline.

The markets are seeing relief in commodity prices, providing room for the dollar to continue its recent rally. With that said, any hint of negative news from the weak performing financials or continued losses in the housing market could cause a significant turnaround in the dollar. Pending home sales fell to -4.7% vs. -2.4% expected, while it is a volatile number, we remain attentive to housing data. Consumer credit is scheduled to be announced this afternoon, concluding a rather light day in economic news from the US.

Aarushi's Murder Mystery

A lot has been said and done, and it seems that Arushi's murder case has lost its authenticity and it is quite obvious that the end result could be deemed nothing more than dispersed debris of the truth! Many questions still remains unanswered..
CJ: Upendra Singh , 23 Jun 2008 Views:3431 Comments:6
AARUSHI TALWAR’S murder case has fetched significant national attention and could be easily termed as one of the most mysterious and talked about incidents in India. Facts and fictions have ominously obscured the sensational murder of the 14-year-old girl raising gruesome speculations and springing to fore the shallowness of professional ethics and social responsibilities. This murder mystery has become an example of newly evolved tendency of sensationalising matters in the Indian media, accusations of overkill and investigations of police and TV channels leading to chaos and hara-kiri.
A lot has been said about Aarushi that could be termed as character assassination by Noida police in its initial investigation. The language used by Noida police could be easily termed as a violation of social norms of decency. Before any conclusion could be reached, they maligned the character of the girl child tagging her as character-less. The police’s theory about her father, Dr Ramesh Talwar’s affair with Anita Durrani, and the knowledge of this to Aarushi and again father seeing Aarushi in an intimate relationship with the house aide, Hemraj, sounds absurd and embarrassing.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in its investigation, has said that it is not a matter of honour killing which Noida police had claimed in its reports. However, it seems that efforts have been made at extraordinary lengths to ensure that character assassination is complete, wherein a TV channel even came up with a sleazy MMS confirming that the girl in the video was Aarushi. Recently, the Information & Broadcasting Ministry had to issue a show cause notice to Balaji Telefilms prohibiting from telecasting the episode in a serial depicting honour killing and also to the TV channel on telecasting the MMS of the school kid which was obscene, derogatory, disparaging and against good taste and decency norms.
Right since CBI took over this case for investigation, every now and then a new theory makes inroads for further analysis and speculations. Even after the detection of so many aspects, CBI is still searching for actual path, and people are not able to link the various events in a meaningful manner. In the hind sight, one could easily find out one common factor- and that is accusations. Right since the day of this event, people are confronted with new accusations being made and lies after lies to cover up such accusations. A lot has been said and it seems that this case has lost its authenticity, and it is quite obvious that the end result could be deemed as nothing more than dispersed debris of the truth.
In the first instance, the main suspect was Hemraj, going by the remarks of Talwars, which thankfully ended with his dead body being found on the terrace of Talwars’ flat. Noida police then accused Dr Talwar as the main culprit of murdering his daughter which again has not fallen in place up till now. CBI traded a different path accusing Krishna, the compounder of Dr Talwar, as the main culprit and told in Ghajiabad court and even revealed in press release of his confession. It was believed that the case would find definite direction after Krisna’s confession of his involvement in the murder and his giving a clean chit to Talwars.
But the question arises, why is Dr Talwar still in custody? Why are lie detector tests being performed one after another on Durrani, Nupur Talwar, the servant of Durrani- Rajkumar and even Ramesh Talwar? If Krishna is the culprit, then CBI should have not conducted further tests and trials on them. But the truth is far from reach even to this point. CBI has found discrepancies in Krishna’s statements when subjected to various tests including narco-analysis and lie-detector tests.
The motive of the murder has not yet been pin pointed, as every theory has
Other Articles by Upendra Singh
failed to lead to any conclusion, neither have the real culprits being unveiled until now. It is difficult to understand whether the CBI is deliberately keeping all the details under cover or maybe it really doesn’t have anything substantial to come up with. It has been more than a month and we are still in dilemma about the truth in Aarushi’s case. Is it Krishna or Rajkumar, or Dr Talwar who is the main culprit; or is there any other person who is not in the picture yet, is the sculpture of this murder mystery? The question remains unanswered as of now and speculations are at rife!
